Who we are

The Nigerian Cartographic Association (NCA) is the officially recognised professional body of all map makers and GIS data visualisation professionals in Nigeria. It was founded in 1978 by a dynamic association of individuals in the academia and public service as a platform or vehicle for advancing interest in the development, studying and the practice of Cartography as a profession in Nigeria. Thus, the Association is open to individuals and organizations with interest and passion in the study, production and use of maps and its related technologies. it is a non-profit professional organization.

Our Vision

As the world embraces geospatial technologies with increasing enthusiasm, the quantity, quality, currency and relevance of geospatial information is no doubt transforming the way we can visualize our worlds today. The vision and dream of the Association are therefore geared towards exploring modern skills, knowledge and opportunities for all our members to take advantage of the global integration of geospatial technologies through enhanced cartographic training, professional practice and career development in Nigeria.

Aim and Objectives

The Nigerian Cartographic Association, since its inception set for itself a well-defined goal, which aims to promote the awareness and interest in Cartographic and Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) and other topical issues related to mapping or the use of maps in Nigeria and beyond. It equally strives to encourage and advocate for a strong development, utilization and integration of modern geospatial technologies to meet maps and mapping needs towards national development.

In pursuance of the aim of the Association, the following specific objectives were set.

  • To advance the Art, Science and Technology of Cartography in its entirety, in furtherance of the public welfare and in the interest of those who use maps and cartographic data and those who produce them.
  • To contribute to public education in the use of maps, cartographic data, and charts, and to encourage the prosecution of mapping and charting programmes for national development.
  • To encourage improvement in the cartographic curricula of the Universities, the Polytechnics and other institutions as the technological and manpower situation in the country may demand.
  • To support programmes of research through publication of Reports, Journals, Periodicals, and Conference Proceedings and the organization of exhibitions as may from time to time be necessary to highlight new trends and techniques in the field of Cartography and allied professions.
  • To organise conferences, seminars, technical workshops and exhibitions and to create a forum for continuing dialogue among members and between cartographers on the one hand and governments of the federation and their agencies on the other with a view to focusing attention on the ever-changing demands of cartographic expertise in the light of decisions reached at such seminars, conferences, symposia, exhibitions, etc.
  • To honor the leaders in the Art, Science and Technology of Cartography and Mapping for the purpose of encouraging other cartographers to contribute their best to the development of the profession.
